spent our fourth of july watching a classic american musical. "west side story". we hadn't seen this new revival and i'm glad we finally did. the music (played here by a full orchestra) is still amazing. jerome robbins' recreated choreography is stunning. those two reasons alone make the show worth seeing. however, there are several other great things about this revival: tony winner karen olivo as anita, the beautiful (and beautiful-voiced) josefina scaglione as maria, and the handsome, talented matt cavenaugh, who creates a terrifically understated tony. the ensemble is deep and strong. howell binkley's lighting design is so lovely. it's a revivial that has been long in coming and it's quite a beautiful one.
